Their small organically-run estate specialises in Riesling like this one, but they also make Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris, and a mean Pinot Noir.
Cradled between the wooded Harrdt mountains in Germany, the Pfalz region is truly beautiful. Wending, scenic hiking paths roll between the hills, waiting to be traversed after sampling one of the many local wines.
The farm itself, Weingut Mehling, is run by a family that demonstrates a deep desire to cultivate rich, robust, and wild wines. The estate is owned by Kathrin and Christoph, while Kathrin’s parents and sister lend their hands to the business. Due to the fertile, volcanic soil, as well as their premium Pfalz plots the grapes that are cultivated here practically burst with flavour. They specialize in Reisling but also make Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris, and a mean Pinot Noir.
Kathrin and Christoph’s wine-making philosophy is somewhat unique: they think that each harvest should speak for itself, not be forced into the same specific flavour every year. This is why they make the conscious choice not to use artificial fertilizer. They want their grapes to grow into whatever nature dictates.
Their wines are spontaneous and fresh, throwing us into memories of Italian herb gardens or barbeques on the beach.
