Located in the middle of a World Heritage Site – the National Park Neusiedler See, on the Eastern side of the Neusiedler See Lake – Meinklang is a unique, family-run mixed farm. Directly bordering the Hungarian lowlands, this is a place where life’s diversity and complexity are celebrated. The producers like to say that their farm functions much like an organism. For example, it relies not only on the people who run it, but on the local cows who contribute their natural and invaluable fertiliser, essential to the growing process. Neighbouring the elegant grapevines, this site’s agricultural diversity is enriched by ancient grains such as spelt, farro, and einkorn wheat, as well as fruit orchards, vegetable gardens and meadows of wild herbs and flowers.
Tucked in the southeast corner of Austria, Burgenland is a picture of biodiversity. Here grain, fruit, livestock and wine are equally important. The produce from the farm feed the animals and the animal waste fertilizes the crop in a natural cycle. The vines are smack in the middle of this total symbiosis - benefitting from a healthy fertile soil, insects, animals and everything that comes with it. What do you get? A natural wine in its truest sense.
TThree brothers run Meinklang: Lukas tends the animals on the farm, Hannes works the fields, and Werner crafts the grapes. Three generations of the family are also living and working on the estate, but with over 2000 hectares of land there’s plenty of room for everyone.
In the cellar, the wine moves with gravity while fermentation and maturation are conducted in stainless steel, large used oak barrels or concrete eggs. The farm itself functions as a living organism with each part benefiting the next. From vine to cellar to wine, Meinklang is natural through and through.
